Band President – Mr Gerry Russell

by Deb Lyons

Gerry Russell has lived and worked in Bolton for over fifty years and was one of the five people responsible for the design and building of the town’s World famous Octagon Theatre, which opened back in 1967.

Born in 1944 in the West Midlands town of Wolverhampton, Gerry was involved in the design of the initial lighting and sound systems for the Octagon Theatre from the outset in 1965 whilst still a student at Loughborough Teacher Training College. When the Octagon Theatre was completed and opened remarkably quickly, by 1967, Gerry was the theatre’s first ever electrician and stayed in the post for two years until he had decided that Bolton would be his permanent home for life and needed a fresh challenge as a young man still only in his mid-twenties. By 1982 Gerry had started his own business in Bolton, G N Systems, which he ran very successfully for over thirty years until retiring in November 2013.

Gerry is very proud, honoured and delighted to be the President of Eagley Band.

Christmas CD Recording With World of Brass

by Deb Lyons

Eagley Band is to record its first ever Christmas CD this year and has booked World of Brass (Doyen) and its Senior Producer Richard Scott to mastermind the project.

Mr Scott is not only the producer/engineer behind almost every Black Dyke Band and Obrasso CD recording of the past quarter of a century but also masterminds the annual best-selling brass band CD recording of the ‘Areas’ test pieces every year. Mr Scott was also the producer/engineer who recorded the 2017 Eagley CD ‘From Sinatra To Wicked’ so successfully.

The new 2018 Eagley Band Christmas CD recording project has the straightforward working title of ‘An Eagley Christmas’ and will feature a host of brand new arrangements made especially for the project by conductor Chris Wormald and Bass Trombonist Declan Cullen, together with published arrangements and Gordon Langford’s seasonal masterpiece ‘A Christmas Fantasy.’

The recordings will take place in Bolton over the weekend of Saturday June 30th and Sunday July 1st.

Consolidation At Blackpool After Our January Promotion

by Deb Lyons

On Sunday February 25th we made our Eagley Band debut in the 2nd Section Area Contest of the North West Area Regional Qualifying Competition for the 2018 National Brass Band Championships of Great Britain at The Winter Gardens in Blackpool.

Just a year ago, on the corresponding weekend in February 2017, Eagley had been competing in the 3rd Section at the same venue and although we drew to play last of all the bands on that day (a draw which no band ever wants), our 5th place on that occasion ensured promotion to the 2nd Section from January 2018.

Following £700 prize money in finishing 3rd place in the 2nd Section of the 2018 Butlins Contest in January, hopes were certainly high for a great Eagley result at Blackpool this year, but once again with no luck whatsoever at the draw, Eagley drew to play at the very end of the day again for the second year in a row, this time playing No.20 of the 21 competing bands, and in doing so the band once again failed to find favour with the adjudicators. Much fancied rivals Delph, who qualified for the 2017 National Brass Band Championship Finals at Cheltenham, were surprisingly placed a very lowly 19th of the 21 competing bands in the results of the day and with other favoured bands placed 15th, 17th and 18th, Eagley’s placing of 11th was far from as bad as might have been the case on a day when the 2nd Section North West Area results were certainly very far away from the form guide and predicted outcomes.

Here’s to Blackpool 2019 and hopefully drawing to play much earlier in the day!

Eagley Band Supporting the Mayor’s Charities

The Eagley Band, Smithills Community Choir and Band played the Albert Halls. Where more than 500 people enjoyed the concert at the newly re-opened Albert Halls on Saturday evening.

The crowd were entertained by the Eagley Band, Smithills Community Choir and Band, with conductor Chris Wormald and Bolton pianist Robert Aston, who accompanied the choir.

The Mayor of Bolton, Cllr Roger Hayes, said: “It goes without saying that I must thank Chris and every performer straight away for another tremendous concert played to a full hall of Bolton people.

“It was another great night for the town.”

The concert was held to raise money for the Mayor’s charities, Urban Outreach, City of Sanctuary and NHS Bolton Hospital Charitable Trust.

Eagley Win £700 At 2018 Butlins Brass Band Championships

by Deb Lyons

We are delighted to announce that following our win at the 2017 Ripon Brass Band Contest, we have won another £700 prize at the 2018 Butlins Brass Band Championships held in Skegness!

Having only been promoted from the Third Section into the Second Section from January 1st this year, just eleven days later we took on fourteen established Second Section bands at Butlins against whom we should have had little chance of achieving any success at all, but not only were we awarded Third Place in the contest and the excellent £700 prize money which went with it, we were within a whisker of winning the competition, such were the fine margins at the top of the section.

Conductor Chris Wormald said “Achieving Third Place in such a major contest just eleven days after being promoted is quite incredible. As a conductor I don’t think I have ever been more happy with achieving a Third Place in a contest before and it is a tribute to the fantastic effort and hard work of all the players. Having said that, a number of observers on the day thought that we had achieved the impossible and actually won the contest outright, such was the quality of our performance at this new, higher level.”

Eagley can next be heard in concert as early as Saturday January 27th in The Albert Hall (Bolton Town Hall) in a Gala Concert in aid of the Mayor of Bolton’s charity. The programme will include many popular tunes and spectacular film music. Tickets for the charity concert are just £6 (£5 concessions) available from Booth’s Music Shop in Churchgate and Egerton Tickets

Victoria Hall Christmas Concert Triumph And An Audience of A Thousand!

Our 2017 Christmas Concert with guests Smithills Community Choir and Smithills Community Band in Bolton’s Victoria Hall on Saturday December 16th not only once again attracted a bumper audience of just under a thousand people, but was yet another one of the great, great nights for everyone who was there.

With another huge Victoria Hall audience to entertain (our third in a row this year since our debut in April) and once again in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton, Councillor Roger Hayes and his wife, the atmosphere was superb from the very first note. Our programme included The Polar Express and The Snowman to Sleigh Ride and Merry Christmas Everybody, plus the obligatory White Christmas, Christmas Song and many others. The joint items of Mid-Winter and A Christmas Fantasy with the choir received incredible ovations from the audience and, at the very end of the concert, the audience literally refused to move or go home, demanding at least one encore at the very least!

Throughout the whole concert the atmosphere was superb, the absolute best, and the subsequent messages and e-mails have been proof (if it were needed) that everyone in the audience thoroughly enjoyed a very special night to start off their Christmas.

Like brass bands of all levels and standards, December and the Christmas period in particular are, by far, the busiest weeks of the year and require exceptional commitment from every band member, conductor and band supporter in carrying out a wide variety of full band, small band and even smaller band engagements on a nightly basis. Once again this year December has been an exceptional and highly enjoyable and successful month for Eagley and we hope 2018 will start off just as superbly, with our first appearance in a Second Section Contest (since our promotion) at Butlins in Skegness on Saturday January 13th and almost immediately after that, a Gala Concert in Bolton’s Albert Hall, inside Bolton Town Hall, just two weeks later, on Saturday January 27th at 7.30pm, again in the presence of the Mayor and Mayoress of Bolton.
